Tinea capitis is a chronic fungal infection of the scalp occurring commonly in children [].The inflammation damages both hair and scalp follicles and manifests as erythema, scaling, hair loss, abscesses and/or scar formation after recession of the original infection [].It is the most common fungal infection among children of school age, especially in developing countries [1, 3-6] Tinea capitis is a common infection especially in poor resource settings. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence Tinea capitis in children from selected schools from an urban slum in Nairobi city of Kenya. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 150 school going children during the period between May and September 2013. A questionnaire was administered and cultures of scalps. Tinea capitis is rare in adults, particularly when the infectious agent is Trichophyton rubrum, and affected patients often exhibit comorbidities associated with diminished immune surveillance.
